Have you been seeing accent walls all over the internet? Cause I sure have! Apparently, it’s the latest décor trend to take over the web, and the perfect addition to set the tone of any room. What’s an accent wall, you ask? It’s an interior or exterior wall designed/decorated differently to be the prime focal point of a living space. This includes so many variations that range from different designs, colors, materials and hardware; it gives lots of leeway for creativity.
To be completely honest, I’ve never done an accent wall like this before. However, if you’ve followed my journey on Instagram, you’d know I never say ‘no’ to a challenge! Of course it being the hottest DIY trend of the moment, I knew I wanted to partake too!
My mother had recently bought a house and when she asked me to assist in designing and decorating her guest room, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Thank God, she gave me free rein (and trust) to take over and transform the room.
Over several weeks, I started brainstorming the style and design I wanted to create. Spent some time sketching out the accent wall design and created a mood board. You can see my drawing and the mood board below.
After measuring the wall and making a list of the materials needed, we took a trip to Home Depot. We, meaning my husband and I because of course, I added him to the project. LOL!
With so many variations of accent walls, the list of materials needed are all different based on the look you are trying to achieve. Below, I am sharing with you the list of materials we used to create the accent wall:
Primed Boards– we used 1x3x8 but you can customize your wall using your desired boards
I am all about saving time, so I had Home Depot cut the boards into different sizes. My husband cut them at an angle when we were sure about placing. While at my mother’s, we aligned the boards on the wall to determine the style and gauge the spaces between the boards.
After all the pieces were cut, I started to nail them on the wall. I used the level to make sure they were positioned straight. I did the big pieces first as you can see on the picture below.
Now that the big pieces were done, I went back and added the others boards in between. Notice how the smaller boards are facing a different direction. This effect gave the wall more dimension and pizzazz, which I loved!
Since the wall was boarded up, I went back to fill every hole with nail hole filler and caulked the boards to give it a flushed look on the wall. After it was all dried, the painting party started with the most perfect shade of green!
The ideal shade of green was found at Sherwin Williams. I knew I wanted a stunning and moody color and Roycroft Bottle Green fit the description.
I mean, how amazing is this wall and the color? Don’t you agree?
Styling this room was pretty easy. Since I had created a mood board previously, I knew exactly what to hunt for at the stores.
Not every piece I had on the mood board was found and/or selected. However, I did luck out on most of the items on my “wish list”. The list below includes all the items that were purchased to decorate the room.
Bedding, Curtains, Wall art- At Home
End Table- Tj Maxx
Lamp- Home Goods
Hope you found some inspiration while coming along my journey with this room transformation. If you are into accent walls, I challenge you- to go out there and make one. Just remember, it only has to be perfect for YOU! Don’t forget to tag me!
