Bold Green Walls, Striped Wallpaper and Gold Accents

When it comes to home makeovers, the laundry room often gets overlooked. But why not turn this functional space into something stylish and inspiring? In my latest DIY project, I transformed my laundry room with dark green paint, striped peel-and-stick wallpaper, box molding, and a stunning gold chandelier—and the result is a space that feels luxurious yet practical.
If you’re looking for laundry room ideas or planning a budget-friendly home update, this makeover proves that a little creativity can go a long way.
Before the Makeover: A Forgotten Space
My laundry room was dull and purely functional. I painted an accent wall Robin’s egg blue for a pop of color, but it wasn’t enough. It became a cluttered space for laundry and our dog’s items, lacking structure and proper use. I aimed to add character, depth, and elegance without a full renovation, so I chose paint, wallpaper, and molding to create a high-end look affordably.

Adding Striped Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
I began applying the striped peel-and-stick wallpaper to the upper half of all the walls. Anticipating a darker paint for the lower half, I selected wallpaper that provided an ideal contrast. The precise khaki and white stripes introduced a touch of classic elegance while also creating the optical illusion of increased height and space in the room. Although the stripes are khaki and white, they present as a muted sage-taupe color.

Why I Love Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper:
- Easy to install (no messy glue or paste!) – Side note: I still added wallpaper adhesive since I have lightly textured walls. It’s not required, it’s just my preference.
- Budget-friendly compared to traditional wallpaper.
- Removable and renter-friendly—perfect if you like to switch things up. If that’s the case, don’t use additional adhesive.
Painting the Walls a Bold Dark Green
I knew I wanted a moody, sophisticated feel, so I chose the perfect green paint for the walls. I tested several shades and Dried Thyme by HGTV for Sherwin Williams won my heart. Green is not only my favorite color but it’s a timeless color. It also brings warmth and depth to a space. Made the room feel elevated and cozy while still being fresh and modern.

Pro Tip: When using a dark paint color, make sure to balance it with lighter accents (like wallpaper or decor) to prevent the space from feeling too heavy. If your vibe is moody, color drenching a room is the way to go.
Enhancing the Walls with Box Molding
To give the walls even more dimension and elegance, I installed box molding. My husband jokes that I am obsessed with box moldings because I tend to aggravate towards them but the truth is that this simple yet sophisticated design element, elevates any space. Making it look like a custom, high-end renovation without excessive costs.

DIY Tip: If you’re new to trim work, pre-measure everything carefully and use a level to ensure straight lines. I use a shear specifically for trims, that way I am able to cut at my desired measurements. This part can be tedious but a little patience goes a long way in achieving that polished, professional look!
Décor and Wall Art
A room makeover needs decor, so I chose simple wall art that matched the room’s look. I printed the art from Etsy in my office and used two wooden tones for the frames to contrast with the striped wallpaper. The wall art added warmth and made the space feel intentional and stylish.

Choosing the Right Wall Art for a Laundry Room:
- Make laundry enjoyable with elements that bring you joy.
- Match your colors – Use gold frames, neutral tones, or bold colors that complement your walls.
- Add texture – Use framed prints, canvas art, or woven pieces for dimension.
The Finishing Touch – A Gold Chandelier
A stylish space needs a statement piece, and I chose a chandelier for the laundry room. Yes! A chandelier in the laundry room. This mid-century fixture from Lowe’s adds glamour and sophistication, making the room feel more like a retreat.

Why Gold Fixtures Work: It brings warmth and elegance, pairs beautifully with dark green and neutral tones and adds modern sophistication.
The Final Reveal: A Laundry Room That Feels Luxe & Inviting

This DIY laundry room makeover changed the space significantly. The combination of green walls, striped wallpaper, molding, and a chandelier created a balanced design that makes doing laundry more pleasant. Our golden doodle, Enzo, also got a new “room”. We upgraded his kennel and bought him one that’s more modern, cozier, and functional. It even looks good as a furniture cabinet in the laundry room.
